Yesterday, I went to Sadler’s Wells in London to attend the 2024 Theatre Book Prize. This prize was established to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Society for Theatre Research in 1998, and is a strong supporter of theatre books and writers whose work is both scholarly and accessible. I’m a member of the Society but this was the first time I had attended in person. I went partly to meet other writers working in a similar field to me, and couldn’t have hoped to meet a friendlier group of people.
The shortlist was:
A Sense of Theatre by Richard Pilbrow (Unicorn).
Different Aspects by Michael Ball (Blink Publishing).
Exploring Shakespeare by Bill Alexander (Nick Hern Books).
Out for Blood: A Cultural History of Carrie the Musical by Chris Adams (Methuen Drama).
Searching for Juliet by Sophie Duncan (Sceptre).
Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench (Michael Joseph).
The judges were lecturer Dr Kate Dorney, critic Clive Davis and theatre PR Kevin Wilson. The winner (drumroll) was Chris Adams - you can find out more about his book and the other nominees on the Society’s website »
